Love at Second Site
The adventure never ends. I was determined to travel all
over the world before I got old so I took off after college and headed west,
then south then north then west again. Never finding anywhere worth settling
down more than a couple of years. I ended up in Santa Barbara of all places, could not be more beautiful and expensive.
But I decided I would give it a try. The sailing, windsurfing, swimming, hiking scene was the best.
The best way to meet new people is to join a local club and
participate in events. I had to join the
most expensive club besides golfing to infiltrate. It was sailing. I had my
father bring his boat out for the winters and we sailed and met people.
One fall day I was walking along the Santa Barbara break
wall with my poodle, Anabel and a man walked up to me and introduced himself. We both knew each other’s
brother or sister but we did not know each other. This was nice, but nothing
else happened.
A couple months went by and we meet again, he asked me out.
Well that was it, we both knew it was love at second sight. That was in
September and by Halloween we were living together and knew we would be
together forever married or not, it just really did not matter.
We bought a high performance sail boat together. It was an
I-14 and it was wood. We called it Splinter for obvious reasons. One day we were
going to go out sailing. There was no wind and a very hot day. I did not want
to go, and I made it quite clear I was not going to go. After a lot of
persuasion I agreed to go out. By this time I was very grumpy. I went to the yacht club and got changed into
my wet suit and meet him at the dock. We launched the boat in the harbour. And
a funny thing happened, all our friends were going out, this was not right, we would
never go out unless there was wind. So we took off from the dock and the
skipper told me to launch the kite, I told him he was nuts that we would just
have to take it down when we reached the quay to get out the harbour.
He convinced me to launch the kite. As I was busy doing this
which took a lot of work and cleaning up lines I did not trim it right off.
Then Kirk yelled at me to trim the kite. I was now about ready to throw him over
board.
I finally looked up at the kite to trim it and it said,
“Gale, I Love You Will You Marry Me!”
